Your eyesight and the preservation of it are important! <\/p>\n<p>In Hong Kong, over 3.5 million people have refractive errors and about 2 million people need reading corrections.<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent study from the Optometry School at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on school children aged 6 to 17, 30% of the 6 \u2013 7 year old group were short-sighted and this increased to almost 70% for the 16 \u201317 year old group.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, about 30% of children are found to have binocular coordination problems such as lazy eyes (amblyopia), turned eyes (squint), focusing problems and those with learning problems are around 5 &#8211; 10%. <\/p>\n<p>Therefore, early detection, correction and management of refractive errors are vital in ensuring normal development and functioning of the visual system. In addition, a pair of accurately prescribed glasses not only provides clear vision but may also help retard the progression of refractive errors.<\/p>\n<p>Glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment and macular degeneration are vision-threatening diseases. In 1996, Glaucoma accounted for 19% of blindness cases in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, these conditions are not preventable.
