Why do we need regular eye examination?
The eye as the window of our soul
Think about this: Over 80% of all information the human body receives are through the visual system! Your eyesight and the preservation of it are important!
In Hong Kong, over 3.5 million people have refractive errors and about 2 million people need reading corrections.
According to a recent study from the Optometry School at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on school children aged 6 to 17, 30% of the 6 – 7 year old group were short-sighted and this increased to almost 70% for the 16 –17 year old group.
Moreover, about 30% of children are found to have binocular coordination problems such as lazy eyes (amblyopia), turned eyes (squint), focusing problems and those with learning problems are around 5 – 10%.
Therefore, early detection, correction and management of refractive errors are vital in ensuring normal development and functioning of the visual system. In addition, a pair of accurately prescribed glasses not only provides clear vision but may also help retard the progression of refractive errors.
Glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment and macular degeneration are vision-threatening diseases. In 1996, Glaucoma accounted for 19% of blindness cases in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, these conditions are not preventable. Early detection and treatment is the best way to control them.
Now, can you see the importance of a regular eye examination?
